What exactly are the "Additional Memories" from in's Creed?

I just got done playing in's Creed as a refresher so I know what might be going on for the second one and saw the "Additional Memories" slot on the animus screen. I haven't gone and collected all the flags and what not yet and was wondering if this is actually something you play/watch and if it was worth it or not. Thanks
