Which is better for the enviorment?

When I was sitting on a bench in Winn Dixie I saw that they had brown paper bags in a little cubby beneath the checkout station. But on top where they bag your groceries, there were plastic bags. So I was wondering which is better for the enviorment? Paper bags from trees, or Plastic bags from oil.
