Would be authors, why do you agonize so over the names of your charaters?

Almost every night one or more of you submit questions about names for your characters, sometimes with long lists of potential candidates, sometimes just looking for suggestions. Do you think "Silas Marner" would have been a bad novel if it had been called "Ernest Whitley"? Would "Romeo and Juliet' have failed on the stage if it had been called "Marcus and Sophia"?
